Gary Burchell - Whats everyone tweeting about
Garry produced two natural street photography images for a “What’s everyone tweeting about” campaign. The heads of the models are however replaced with that of a blue bird to represent the twitter logo using a transposed effect.
1. The first image is set at a bus stop and although the image was taken at night the lighting creates a very bright image, I feel its naturalistic nature is what makes the image a success. We see models carrying out a very casual life, walking down the street relaxing while waiting for a bus; they are also on their phones. The shock of the image is that the models are not as simplistic and natural as we first see due to their heads which have been replaced by blue birds. I feel there are no main focal points in this photograph instead we just wander around the image looking at these different birds/people and due to leading lines in the image we are drawn by the directions in which the bird heads and beaks are facing to focus on the models on their phones.
This makes a connection of phones and blue birds; this is when the theme of tweeting is made apparent to the mind. The main elements of the photograph is the scene, it’s a scene where everyone can relate to, walking on the street and being at a bus stop. The birds at first shocked me, I feel that if I had not known the title of the images I would have taken a long time to realise what the photographer was trying to portray.
2. It becomes more noticeable in the second image that the photographs were taken at night due to the lighting. Here there is a close up of two people/birds as the photographs focal point. The background also features more models.
I love the way the images focus on creating a foreground and background as part of the image’s composition. The use of lighting help to create a more surreal tone in the image, I feel this puts emphasis on the fact that the message is being put across through word play and figurative “speech" rather than more literal campaigns.
The image features a lot of subtle contrasts and the choice of blue adds a cool harshness which allows the bird heads to stand out more than the rest of the image yet not become the predominant focus. There are some hard lighting but they become muted out due to the colouring of the image.
The photographs seem to be taken from what could be another person who just also happened to be on the street. That key element of candid street photography is portrayed through these images. I feel the message of this campaign is to get people thinking about a brand which is trying to be advertised. There is a hint of commercial photography. This image makes me feel that I may communicate through technology too much, as I feel I am one of those people who are constantly on their phones. Other people however may only see the commercial side and interpret it as an advertisement for twitter and phones.
My main love in this image has to be the photographers use of colour and lighting, I feel he is able to make his models
and the street scene light up in his night shots.
